Taking the plight of mental health to new heights
In an effort to elevate the importance of funding for youth mental health, ClearThinking volunteer Louise Bellchambers is taking the ClearThinking Cube to new heights on Thursday, 6th October 2011.
After living in the ClearThinking Cube for 100 hours last year, Mrs Bellchambers is raising the 3m x 3m clear cube to a two-storey platform in King George Square, in an effort to emphasise the scale of the crisis facing youth mental health.
“One in four young people experience a mental disorder in any one year, yet less than 30% get any mental health care. Plus, about 1 in 10 of all teenagers make at least one serious suicide attempt,” says Mrs Bellchambers. “These horrifying statistics, coupled with the fact that mental health is the only major disease group where mortality rates are increasing, does not bode well for our children’s futures.”
Mrs Bellchambers brought a new level of transparency and focus to the issues surrounding mental health by living in the ClearThinking Cube for 100 hours last year. This year, she will be joined by nine other individuals who together will spend 100-man-hours inside the 3m x 3m cube, prior to World Mental Health Day on Monday October 10.
